Our Story

The Modern Martial Arts Institute of Birmingham, ALModern Martial Arts Institute has been offering instruction and training in the martial arts since 2005. Located in Pelham, AL, Modern Martial Arts Institute has produced champions in life as well as in the martial arts.

Modern Martial Arts Institute (MMAI) is Birmingham Alabama's ONLY complete training center for the study of self-defense. At MMAI we offer a wide range skills, which will develop both the physical and mental attributes associated with martial arts/self defense training.

MMAI is focused on teaching only those techniques and systems that can be used for today's "Real World" confrontations. Not techniques that are just for sport. No matter what you come to MMAI for, we can help. Whether you come for recreational purposes, self-defense, weight loss, or any other reason we have the knowledge to help you succeed. Modern Martial Arts Institute doesn't just teach adults either. MMAI has a terrific kids program which starts out at just 7 years old. We teach them not only how to defend themselves, but we also teach them personal development and life skills as well.

The Modern Martial Arts Institute of Birmingham, AL

Headed by Master Kevin Smith and a staff of expert instructors and managers, including Rebecca Smith, and David Allen, Modern Martial Arts Institute offers a number of programs for physical fitness and instruction in Wing Tsun & the Filipino arts.

What is our system about?

The philosophy of the martial arts is the achieving of harmonious values by individuals who live by peace, wisdom, morals, love, compassion and self-discipline through intellectual means.

The primary goal of learning proper martial arts is Self-Defense and to become a better understanding person who lives with a greater expectation of a sincere life. Good quality of life requires having a healthy life both mentally physically – it is essential. The martial arts cannot exist without the mental aspect, which is the foundation that physical improvements are built upon.

The mental aspects of martial arts are not as quickly seen when compared to the almost-immediate physical improvements. After only a year of practice you may notice subtle changes in work, school, home life, and life in general.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The martial arts are physically demanding and include contact through drills and sparring. Because these activities may be strenuous, it is essential that a physician be consulted prior to training.
