Frequently Asked Questions

This is a list of answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" asked of Modern Martial Arts Institute. Our FAQ list is intended as a quick resource and may not completely address the issue in totality. If you can not find an answer to your question below or need more clarification, please contact us.

Martial Arts for ChildrenDo you teach children?

Absolutely! Here at MMAI we love kids. Our kids classes start at just 7 years old. Not only will they learn fun and exciting martial arts but they will also learn 'Life Skills' as well such as respect, confidence, and discipline. Please see our complete article on Children and the Martial Arts.

Can anyone join your school?

For Adults
Not just anyone can be a student. Only those who are serious about learning and have a teachable attitude need apply. Everyone that joins will go through a trial period. During this period we will be analyzing your behaviors, attitude, and just seeing what type of person you are in general. We are just trying to make sure that you are not the type of person that will use this information for the wrong purposes.

For Kids
Absolutely!! Kids ages 7 and up and any skill level are always welcome here at MMAI.

Can women do martial arts?

Yes! In fact, the reality is that you don’t have to be big and strong to do it. Our system was designed to use structural, aligned strength rather than muscular strength. We have even found that women have more developed contact reflexes and natural relaxation than men already present on the first day of training. Please also see our complete article on Women and the Martial Arts.

Is your system like other martial art systems?

Our system is different from many of today's popular systems, such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Ju-Jitsu and most Kung Fu. These systems block first and then attack. They are “technique based” systems. We emphasize self-defense, focusing on methods that are “concept based”, guided by highly developed contact reflexes. The system is based on human biomechanics rather than animal movements, using primarily straight line, fast, direct strikes and sophisticated attacks, redirecting the force of an opponent rather than attempting to meet a possibly greater force directly.

Martial Arts for Everyone Is your system effective in today’s world?

Yes! Our system has taken in to account today’s self-defense scenarios and has become a state-of-the-art system. Our system is considered a predominately stand up system but if fighting on the ground is necessary, our students learn how to effectively handle it. In fact, our system is equally effective against boxers, kickers and all around street fighter types; not to mention the common thug. Be sure to also see our full article on Our Focus on Self-Defense.

Do you teach self-defense against guns, knives or sticks?

Yes! Everything we teach is reality based. Our instructors work very hard to ensure that most any situation you might encounter is covered in the classroom under very safe learning conditions, so you will be well prepared.

What makes your system so effective?

Our system was designed for real street self-defense through the scientific use of the human body. It is a real world martial art and not sport oriented. Its focus is on hand to hand self-defense, whether standing or on the ground, with or without weapons. Our way of training is innovative in nature so our system is a complete twenty-first-century self-defense system.

How long does it take to learn?

In as little as 6 months to a year a student can yield significant advancement in his or her fighting (self-defense) ability. However, in order to become what is considered highly skilled it will take 5 to 10 years of consistent training.

If I learn your martial arts, will I need to learn something else?

No! Our system is complete and up to date. Whether your goals are self-confidence, self-defense, personal development, fitness or to earn a black belt, our school will take you there.

What are your rates?

We have a couple of different programs. The best thing to do is come in to see what we are all about. If you would like to join our school, then we would like to get to know you a little bit better. We will take the time to speak with you about your goals, concerns and aspirations. We make it a point to make sure you are comfortable with our staff as well as our studio. After that we can iron out all the details of membership.

How can I join your Black Belt Leadership Program?

Before your initial enrollment expires, you can make an appointment to speak to the program director. At that time they will go over your options for continuing your program. At this point you are eligible for the Black Belt Leadership Program (BBLP). The BBLP is a program for members offering discounts on merchandise and events, and special programs for the BBLP members only.

Do you teach weapons?

Yes, but not in the Basic Program. It usually starts off with the student learning how to use a single stick. Then it will move onto double stick.

Do I need any prior martial arts experience?

No! Whether you have experience or not does not matter. You can learn self-protection in a safe, edifying atmosphere with other people just like you; people who want to improve their fitness while learning the valuable skills of self-protection. We know most people have never taken a martial arts class and that's great. Our instructors are patient, professional and totally committed to your progress.

How long does it take to master your system?

To complete the whole system training an average of 2 times per week, takes about 3 - 4 years. This is to attain your Black Belt. To master it can take a lifetime. It is a system that develops according to the individual. If you enjoy something, you do not put a time limit on it. The more effort you put in to learn quickly, the faster you learn.

How often do I need to train? I am very busy and do not have much free time...

Training requires two things: time and patience. Due to the busy life we all live today, we need to adjust and adapt in order to do things we like and enjoy. The more regularly you train, the better it is. MMAI provides three days a week training so that you can adjust your training according to your time schedule.

Do I need to be fit to start training in martial arts?

Firstly it is important not to confuse the fitness developed by weight training and the fitness developed by martial arts. Anyone should be able to do our warm up. We do not require that you do it 100%. Just trying your best is good enough. But we are not a gym. The first form provides internal training which also develops coordination, isometric training, prepares you for the fighting aspects and the fitness required for martial arts. Therefore you develop both your fitness and techniques at the same time.

How do I cancel my membership?

You will be able to cancel your membership in one of three ways. 1. Move more than 25 miles away, 2. Have a note from your doctor saying that you can not permanently continue your training, 3. if you wish to cancel within the first 3 days after enrolling, and giving the school a written notice.

What is the best age to start learning martial arts?

Any age is as good, provided you are ready to dedicate the time needed to train. Then again, in our school, we accept from 7 years old and onwards.

What uniform do I need for training?

At MMAI, when you sign up for classes, you will be given a uniform and a belt.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The martial arts are physically demanding and include contact through drills and sparring. Because these activities may be strenuous, it is essential that a physician be consulted prior to training.
